Messaging

August 6-8, 2021

Online

Track Chairs : Jia Zhai, Dianjin Wang

Messaging system is used to enable communication between systems by sending messages to each other. It is used to decouple heavyweight processing, to buffer or batch work, and to smooth spiky workloads, also it can be used as the basic infrastructure for event driven and streaming systems.

In ASF, there are various projects that provide messaging services, for example: Apache Pulsar, Apache Kafka, Apache RocketMQ, Apache ActiveMQ, [Apache TubeMQ(incubating)](https://tubemq.apache .org/), etc.

In this topic, the messaging communities will share first-line experiences and best practices, exchange ideas and knowledge, and discuss the roadmap and the future of messaging technologies.

Apache Bookkeeper (as a Key Value Stire) and its use cases

English Session

Shivji Kumar Jha

In order to leverage the best performance characters of your stream backend, it is important to understand the nitty gritty details of how your stream server stores your data. Understanding this empowers you to design your use case solutioning so as to make the best use of resources at hand as well as get the optimum amount of consistency, availability, latency and throughput for a given amount of resources at hand.

With this underlying philosophy, in this talk, we will get to the bottom of storage tier of pulsar (apache bookkeeper), the barebones of the bookkeeper storage semantics, how it is used in different use cases ( even other than pulsar), understand the object models of storage in pulsar, different kinds of data structures and algorithms pulsar uses therein and how that maps to the semantics of the storage class shipped with pulsar by default. Oh yes, you can change the storage backend too with some additional code!

This session will empower you with the right background to map your data right with pulsar. The focus will be more on storage backend so as to not keep this tailored to pulsar specifically but to be able to apply it different data stores or streams. Speakers:

Shivji Kumar Jha: Shiv is a senior software developer at Nutanix and works for the beam team helping Nutanix customers minimise cloud costs and security risks for hybrid cloud usage. Shiv works on, among other things, all things pulsar at nutanix managing 4 clusters ((30 nodes)) of pulsar and the use cases around it. Shiv loves spending time on data stores (databases, streams, analytics etc) and has contributed to MySQL and pulsar codebases. Shiv is an avid reader (tech, fiction, economics etc) and is always looking at ways to simplify software architectures.

Kafka Tiered Storage

English Session

Satish Duggana, Sriharsha Chintalapani

Kafka is a vital part of data infrastructure in many organizations. When the Kafka cluster grows and more data is stored in Kafka for a longer duration, several issues related to scalability, efficiency, and operations become important to address. Kafka cluster storage is typically scaled by adding more broker nodes to the cluster. But this also adds needless memory and CPUs to the cluster making overall storage cost less efficient compared to storing the older data in external storage. Tiered storage is introduced to extend Kafka’s storage beyond the local storage available on the Kafka cluster by retaining the older data in cheaper stores, such as HDFS, S3, Azure or GCS with minimal impact on the internals of Kafka.

We will talk about

How tiered storage addresses the above problems and also brings several other advantages.
High level architecture of tiered storage
Future work planned as part of tiered storage.

Speakers:

Satish Duggana: Satish is Lead - Data Infra at Uber. Apache Storm Committer/PMC. Sriharsha Chintalapani: Data Architect at Uber, Apache Kafka Committer & PMC

Sriharsha Chintalapani is the tech lead for Uber’s Data Products and Streaming Infrastructure. He is a Apache Kafka & Storm Committer and PMC

A Pulsar Use Case In Federated Learning

Chinese Session

Jiahao Chen

Federated learning (FL) is a machine learning technique that enables multiple decentralized organizations to train a model without exposing local data samples. Instead, during the training, lots of encrypted messages will be exchanged among the participants to aggregate the global model. Due to the message is so important and its requirements of real-time and sequential, it brings some challenges to the transmission. In this session, we will talk about how to address the above challenge with the Apache Pulsar project, and we will go through the details about how popular FL project FATE(https://github.com/FederatedAI/FATE) use Pulsar to do federated training. Speakers:

Jiahao Chen, software engineer at VMware, specializes in container, network and distributed technology research, and is also actively involved in the construction of open source communities. During his tenure at VMware, he led or participated in the completion of the construction of multiple platform-level projects and is also one of the four maintainers of the open source project Hyperledger-Cello. Familiar with technologies such as virtualization, cloud computing and blockchain.

RBAC authorization in Pulsar

Chinese Session

Zike Yang

RBAC(Role-based access control) is a method for controlling system access based on the roles of individual users. RBAC uses the mapping relationship between users and roles and the permissions corresponding to each role to determine whether each user can take action on some resources. Pulsar uses Casbin to implement the RBAC authorization method. By enabling RBAC authorization method, you can manage which role a user belongs to and what permissions the role has for a certain resource. This talk introduces the RBAC authorization in Pulsar. I’ll explain the basic RBAC concepts and the principle of the Casbin, introduce how to enable RBAC authorization for Pulsar using Casbin Provider, how to set up and manage permissions in Pulsar using RBAC, and how to use Zookeeper Adapter for RBAC in Pulsar. Speakers:

Zike Yang: Zike Yang works as a software engineer at StreamNative. He has been involved in the Pulsar community since 2020.
