Online

Track Chairs : Xiangdong Huang, Christofer Dutz

Recent years, the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications show the requirements about the embedded operation system, data collection from the side, data management both on the side and the cloud, and data analysis technologies. The Apache Software Foundation provides many related projects, like Apache IoTDB, Apache Mynewt, Apache PLC4X and Apache Streampipes to meet users' requirements.

This track will introduce the recent progress, some core technologies and the use experience of IoT related Apache projects (Call For Paper). It will be a great feast for all users and developers who are interested in IoT/IIoT applications.

Apache PLC4X for CAN bus and CANopen

English Session

Łukasz Dywicki

CAN bus is very popular communication standard in cars, however use of it spans above that market. It is widely adopted in building and industrial control systems. Thanks to its arbitration and prioritization capabilities CAN, despite its age, is still system of choice for multiple applications. This presentation will describe very briefly major versions of CAN bus specifications. We will clarify some of most common misunderstandings with protocol versions. The main part of presentation will outline major troubles with implementation of application layer protocols for CAN bus systems. We will have a look at different ways to programmatically access bus to finally see how to interact with it from Java runtime. Continuation of presentation will outline major architectural parts of Apache PLC4X and way how application and transport layers can be used in companion to bridge gap coming from heterogeneous bus access APIs. Finally we will also have a deeper look at CANopen and communication paradigms with real life examples of use. Speakers:

Łukasz Dywicki: Łukasz is software integrator with over a decade of field experience in software integration. From 2010 he participated in number of projects which involved Apache middleware projects. Starting from 2015 he become more and more interested in area of hardware integration and building controls. Result of this interest was creation of BACnet binding for openHAB project. Starting from 2018 he focused more on hardware than software integration. This lead him to cooperation with Apache PLC4X project which brought implementation of CANopen driver in 2020. Łukasz worked so far with BACnet, Modbus, CANopen and Wireless M-Bus. He also did his own experiments with M-Bus as well as Profinet.

IoTDB-Quality:Data quality library for time series data

Chinese Session

王浩宇

Time series data is the main data in IIoT. In the analysis and utiliization of time series data, data quality is vital. Low-quality data may cause problems in our analysis and even mislead our decisions. As a top-level open source project of Apache, Apache IoTDB, the data management system for time series data, can provide users specific services, including storage and analysis. Based on its User Defined Functions (UDF), IoTDB-Quality achieves a series of functions about data quality, including data profiling, data quality evalution and data repairing, which significantly enhances IoTDB and effectively meets the demand for data quality in the industrial field. Speakers:

Wang Haoyu: 2016.9-2020.6 Undergraduate, School of Computer Science and Technology, University of Science and Technology of China 2020.9-Present Graduate Student, School of Software, Tsinghua University

Democratizing ML Pipelines using StreamPipes: Flexible Model Integration and Serving for Industrial IoT Applications

English Session

Philipp Zehnder, Marco Heyden

Apache StreamPipes (incubating) is an industrial IoT toolbox which enables non-technical users to flexibly connect, analyze and exploit continuous data streams. Under the hood, StreamPipes integrates an event-driven microservice architecture with a rich graphical user interface that lets users create stream processing pipelines. In this talk, we focus on analyzing image data from industrial cameras with Machine Learning (ML) and Apache StreamPipes. Based on an application example for Visual Quality Inspection, techniques for integrating ML models into StreamPipes are presented and a demo shows how product defects can be easily recognized in real time using a no-code approach. The talk gives an overview of Apache StreamPipes, highlights the positioning of StreamPipes within the ASF IoT ecosystem and demonstrates how machine learning models can be easily integrated and evaluated within a StreamPipes application. Speakers:

Philipp Zehnder: Philipp Zehnder is a research scientist at the FZI Research Center of Information Technology. His current research interests are in the areas of Distributed Stream Processing and Streaming Machine Learning. He is very interested in open source software, especially in the field of IIoT, and is involved in the Apache StreamPipes (incubation) project.

Marco Heyden: Marco Heyden currently works at the FZI Research Center for Information Technology in Karlsruhe. He is passionate about data stream processing with a focus on unsupervised machine learning and federated learning. He has worked in several public-funded research projects related to Machine Learning and Data Stream Processing in industrial IoT.

High Security IIoT Communication with Apache PLC4X

English Session

Christofer Dutz

In the industrial IoT sector one question always bugged me, as it was usually a show-stopper: “Is this stuff certified?”

Let’s face it! Open-Source and Certified software usually doesn’t match. So I invested a lot of thought, how to blast this argument off the table. What we came up with in the Apache PLC4X project was: Passive Mode Drivers.

With our Passive Mode Drivers we are able to make IoT data available in insecure networks without compromising the high-security production network.

Let me take you on a tour through what we call: Secure by design IIoT communication. Speakers:

Christofer Dutz: Christofer is the son of an electrical engineer and grew up with industrial hardware. He is the initiator and VP of the Apache PLC4X project. He’s also an Apache Member and involved in many Apache project and also projects outside of the ASF. Being a part of the Apache Incubator, he’s also investing a lot of his time in mentoring new Apache projects in the incubator.

StreamPipes’ New Kids on the Block: An Introduction to Edge Extensions, Client API and Data Explorer

English Session

Dominik Riemer, Patrick Wiener

Several community initiatives are working on major feature extensions to Apache StreamPipes which aim to ease the time-consuming task of analyzing Industrial IoT data in a self-service manner. In this talk, we focus on a feature tour of the three latest Apache StreamPipes features that are to be introduced in 2021: First, we introduce StreamPipes Edge Extensions, which allow users to flexibly select deployment targets of pipeline elements, enabling geographic distribution of pipeline elements over the edge-to-cloud continuum. Second, integration of StreamPipes with external applications is significantly improved with the Apache StreamPipes API & Client libraries, a new developer-oriented way to interact with StreamPipes concepts programmatically. Finally, we demonstrate the recently introduced data explorer which eases the interaction and visual exploration of persisted data streams in StreamPipes. The talk will be accompanied by several live demos that illustrate the practical outcome for Apache StreamPipes users. Speakers:

Dominik Riemer: Dominik Riemer is a senior researcher and division manager at the FZI Research Center for Information Technology. His technical work is focused around stream processing in Industrial IoT applications. He is a co-initiator and PPMC member of Apache StreamPipes, a self-service industrial IoT toolbox.

Patrick Wiener: Patrick Wiener currently works at the FZI Research Center for Information Technology in Karlsruhe. His research interests include Distributed Computing (Cloud, Edge/Fog Computing), IoT, and Stream Processing. Patrick is an expert for infrastructure management such as containers and container orchestration frameworks. He has worked in several public-funded research projects and industry projects related to Big Data Management and Stream Processing in domains such as manufacturing, logistics and geographical information systems.
